Sophie South
Principal Civil Engineer
Delivering civil engineering expertise across land development, three waters, roading and flood protection infrastructure to support safe, resilient and sustainable South Island communities.
Our services
Our civil engineering team provides end-to-end three waters services, supporting water supply, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure from early feasibility through to detailed design and construction support. We deliver network modelling, options assessments and practical designs for treatment and reticulation systems, including pump stations and pressure and gravity networks.
Our experience also covers flood modelling, hydrology, hydrogeology, erosion and sediment control, and sustainable urban drainage (SUDs) stormwater solutions such as swales and treatment wetlands.
By understanding how water systems interact with land use, climate and regulatory requirements, we help clients make informed decisions that support long-term resilience.
We design roading and transport infrastructure that supports safe, efficient movement and integrates seamlessly with surrounding land uses. Our services include geometric road design, pavement design for roads, rights of way and car parks, intersection and roundabout design, and civil 3D modelling.
Working from concept through to construction, we consider council standards, site constraints and buildability. Our team also provides procurement, construction phase support and contract management, helping deliver resilient transport infrastructure.
We work alongside developers, landowners and project teams to support greenfield, brownfield and commercial land development across the South Island.
Our civil engineers plan and coordinate essential infrastructure, including three waters, roading, earthworks and utilities such as power, telecommunications and lighting. Taking a holistic, multidisciplinary approach, we align engineering design with planning requirements, site conditions and future growth. This helps manage risk, streamline consenting and supports the efficient delivery of subdivisions and developments.
Our civil infrastructure capability helps public and private projects deliver essential services such as flood protection, water supply, wastewater, roading and catchment-scale stormwater management.
We collaborate closely with our geotechnical, structural, planning, environmental and surveying teams to provide coordinated technical advice from feasibility and business cases through to detailed design and construction. This integrated approach allows us to identify constraints early, manage uncertainty and design infrastructure that meets regulatory requirements and supports long-term asset performance.
Beyond design, we provide construction-phase civil engineering support to help projects be delivered as intended. Our services include preparation of contract documents, tendering and procurement, and acting as Engineer to Contract through to contract administration and construction supervision. We also coordinate utilities and services and provide clear technical input during construction, working closely with contractors and stakeholders. Our focus is always on practical problem-solving, open communication and helping projects move forward with confidence.
How we help
We take a collaborative approach, working closely with our clients and stakeholders while using our expertise to deliver resilient and sustainable infrastructure.
We take time to understand your project objectives, site conditions and regulatory requirements. This early planning and optioneering stage helps identify risks, opportunities and the best way forward.
We develop coordinated civil engineering designs, integrating three waters, roading and essential services. Our focus is on solutions that meet technical standards and support consenting and delivery.
As projects move into construction, we provide technical input, contract administration and construction support to enable designs to be delivered safely, efficiently and as intended.
We stay involved through to completion and commissioning, helping resolve any challenges while supporting long‑term performance. Our goal is infrastructure that works well, lasts longer and supports strong community outcomes.

FAQ
If a property is not connected to a council water supply, water is typically sourced from rainwater, surface water or a groundwater well. Our civil engineering team can advise you on the requirements to protect the source and treat and supply water as defined by the Water Regulator, Taumata Arowai.
Yes. We provide flood modelling and flood risk assessments for land development and infrastructure projects. This includes stormwater capacity assessments and advice on flood mitigation measures to support consenting, design and long-term resilience outcomes.
Yes. Our civil engineers design earthworks for subdivisions, developments and infrastructure projects, considering site conditions, stability, drainage and erosion and sediment control requirements. We work closely with our geotechnical team to manage risk and support efficient construction.
We regularly design and support pump stations for water supply and wastewater networks. This includes options assessments, network modelling, detailed design and construction support for new infrastructure and upgrades to existing systems.
Yes. We work closely with local and regional councils across the South Island. Our civil engineers prepare technical inputs to support land use, subdivision and infrastructure consents and collaborate with our planning team to help projects move smoothly through approval processes.
Yes. Beyond design, we provide construction-phase support, including contract administration, site inspections and responding to construction queries. Staying involved helps ensure designs are delivered as intended and issues are resolved efficiently on site.
Absolutely. We support projects from the earliest stages through feasibility and options assessments. This early input helps identify constraints, costs and opportunities before decisions are locked in.
