The Brief
We’ve been involved in a wide range of subdivision developments over the years. For this commercial subdivision project, an initial site investigation identified a former landfill across part of the site.
Challenges Identified
Due to the potential for waste and generation of ground gases beneath proposed buildings, we carried out a ground gas investigation to assess methane and carbon dioxide levels and the risk they could pose to the development. Methane and carbon dioxide generated within waste can enter buildings through service entry points or defects in foundations. In higher concentrations, methane can create an explosive risk, while carbon dioxide can displace oxygen and present an asphyxiation hazard.
What We Did
Our investigation included installing several permanent shallow ground-gas monitoring wells within the waste. Gas monitoring was then completed on numerous occasions to evaluate gas concentrations and flow rates under various atmospheric conditions.
We also undertook a gas risk assessment in line with international standards, which identified elevated methane levels within the monitoring wells. The assessment included evaluating the potential risk of gas migration into the proposed building. The findings were then used to produce a ground gas mitigation design to be incorporated by the project team into the foundation structural designs, ensuring the safety of future occupants and longevity of the development.
