The Brief
We’ve been involved in long-term planning and development projects in the Waitarakao / Washdyke Lagoon catchment, north of Timaru. Industrial development is occurring in the short term, alongside planning for the future of the lagoon, which is at risk due to climate change, coastal processes, catchment flooding and drainage restrictions.
What We Did
Canterbury Regional Council, in association with the Waitarakao / Washdyke Taskforce and the Seadown Drainage Rating District, is investigating options for the future management of Seadown Drain and the associated coastal stopbank that contribute to the Waitarakao/Washdyke Lagoon.
This project involved facilitation of a community and expert panel workshop to share and disseminate knowledge, understand risks and opportunities, and discuss potential options.
The workshop outcomes included a number of potential future management options such as beach renourishment, hard defences such as sea walls, managed retreat of assets and short-term reactive solutions. Several options were identified on various timescales. A comparison matrix, decision tree and Dynamic Adaptive Pathways Planning (DAPP) approach was used to assist decision-making moving forward.
