The Brief
Timaru District Council engaged us to investigate the ground conditions to support a major pipeline upgrade through the Pareora Gorge, which forms part of the city’s primary water supply.
What We Did
We carried out a detailed geological investigation of the Pareora Gorge, a significant project for the Timaru region, given it involved the primary water supply for the city. We assessed the geology of the area traversed by the proposed pipeline, culminating in a project-specific engineering report.
Our team crucially assessed ground conditions along the 2.8 km pipeline alignment, mapping key geological features like Tertiary-Permian unconformity and a high-risk landslide area.
We identified critical geotechnical risks in the multi-million-dollar pipeline upgrade, effectively communicated risks and mitigation measures to Timaru District Council. By keeping them informed, we helped them to make decisions. Our advice also led to substantial savings by opting for a more economical solution.
