Structural PS4 - 2020

“Create a timeless yet forward thinking design, close to nature with a spacious and light interior” set the scene and brief for this iconic architectural project. Partnering with designer, Bob Burnett and Architect, Shizuka Yasui, Davis Ogilvie provided structural and geotechnical engineering services (including investigations, reporting, design and construction monitoring) for this award-winning, energy-efficient, sustainable home.

Also fondly known as ‘The Big Cottage’, our structural team meticulously designed the cantilever support beams, wall framing, steel gravity beams, and steel portal frame bracing on the ground floor. We expertly factored in the large open areas and raised raft foundation to accommodate the unique finished floor levels. The size of the foundation was governed by the architectural look.

Using a combination of timber-framed walls and steel portal frames provided optimal bracing for the house. The ground floor consisted of steel portal frames to create spacious open areas, while a selection of steel and timber beams supported the mid floor. For the upper roof, we employed a German product, GLT (glued laminated timber) panels, forming a continuous panel supported by wall and cantilever glulam beams. To maintain a cohesive aesthetic, exterior beams and posts were crafted from Glulam.

The foundation solution addressed the liquefaction hazard while staying true to the architectural aesthetics. We ensured that large section profiles matched the style, and functional requirements were met (internal insulation and a topping slab). Additionally, we provided expert structural engineering for the garage wall bracing and foundation design.

Our attention to detail extended to every facet of this stunning architectural masterpiece. From the overall design and aesthetics to the careful selection of materials, we prioritised both the hidden and visual aspects, resulting in a harmonious blend of form and function.
