Building on a long history of hydrological monitoring, irrigation assessments and modelling within the Manuherekia catchment, Otago, DO continues to support decision-making for the future of water use in the Manuherekia River and its tributaries.

As an historic gold mining region, the Manuherekia catchment has dams, water races, storage reservoirs, significant hydraulic infrastructure, and a complex water-management structure. DO has contributed to monitoring and modelling to support irrigation assessments and the decision-making processes.

DO uses GoldSIM modelling software which is a probabilistic modelling tool – enabling multiple water use scenarios, decades of historical data and end-user requirements to drive a statistical output. This can be used to answer questions such as; How often would the river flow drop below the minimum flow? or What reliability is available to irrigators in an average year? The project aims to develop future water management regimes for the catchment, benefiting all catchment stakeholders, and to support the decision-making process in the community around environmental values and an expanded irrigation network.
