DO was approached by consultants working with the Ministry of Education (MoE) in June 2022 to assist with a ground gas assessment and evaluation of risk posed by a former landfill at the site. MoE were in the preliminary design stages for the redevelopment of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Te Whanau Tahi which would include the demolition of numerous school buildings and construction of their replacements.

Following a peer review of existing data and assessment of gas risk, further gas monitoring was completed on site to assist with evaluating gas migration through the soil profile. This included the completion of gas flux box monitoring at numerous locations within the proposed building footprint in accordance with overseas gas monitoring guidance. On completion of the additional monitoring, initial gas mitigation recommendations were provided to the design team and structural engineers.

Following our involvement with the ground gas risk assessment, DO was retained to provide planning services and to obtain the necessary regional council consents related to the proposed school development. Due to the presence of the landfill waste on site and required earthworks this has included assessments of the effects on stormwater, groundwater and air quality during the construction programme.
