Following the 7.8 magnitude Kaikoura earthquake on the 14th of November 2016, Davis Ogilvie have been engaged by various clients to carry out structural inspections and reporting for a number commercial buildings along the main street, churches and halls and the Mayfair Theatre.
Our initial inspections were carried out on the 22nd of November and the 5th & 6th of December 2016. Due to there being no road access on the 22nd of November our engineers, who had also been carrying out structural inspections throughout the Mt Lyford subdivision were flown by helicopter to Kaikoura to carry out inspections and assess the damage to five buildings down the main street.
Since our initial visits, DO have returned to Kaikoura to assess other buildings along the main street for earthquake damage and are currently working through the repair strategy for one damaged building. We are currently discussing future work with clients which includes structural inspections and reporting or undertaking Initial Seismic or Detailed Seismic Assessments (ISA or DSA).
Following our structural inspections, the DO structural engineers also undertook various designs to aid in repair work and strengthening for a number of buildings.
We were proud to be able to help Kaikoura and the wider North Canterbury region following this series of devastating earthquake.
