48 Main Road is a complex geological engineering site located within a GNS identified Zone (II) of Mass Movement upon the Port Hills of Christchurch.

DO was engaged to investigate the site and the historical past of the area, and to produce complex geological cross sections to be utilised in slope stability modelling.

A combination of historical quarrying and slope modification during the initial construction of the Main Road to Sumner has given rise to the potential slope instability of the site.

However, through in-depth geotechnical design/investigation, detailed slope modelling and pile design a solution was achieved to allow plans to be consented by Christchurch City Council with construction of a new residential dwelling commencing mid-2014.
