On 29th May the Christchurch Geotechnical team went on a field trip. The fieldtrip included visits to Castle Hill Village, Otira George Viaduct, Point Elizabeth, Kaiata Mudstone, and Moana.

Otira Gorge Viaduct – Discussing the surrounding geological structure and the viaducts construction from Deaths Corner. The previous route of SH73 can be seen in the back ground, linear feature from right to left.

Looking up at the Kaiata Mudstone and marine beach deposits sat on top of the grey mudstone, several meters higher than the present shore line.

Observing the high wall at a typical gold mine near Lake Brunner. Glacial outwash gravels overlying sandstone, in between are gold rich soil layers sort after by the miners.
